A few weeks ago, I read an article about the importance of trapping and binding unwanted, non-nutritive substances, such as herbicides/ pesticides, and other potentially harmful materials derived from our foods, so they do not remain in the body. In the past 10 years, I have used and experimented with many types of detoxifications, most of them “cleansed” the body within one and four weeks.  However, none of them lasted more then a few months. Edible clay, such as Bentonite, which, ideally is a daily supplement, binds herbicides and other possible harmful substances by adsorbent action.  The recommended daily serving size is one tablespoon on an empty stomach.

What is edible clay, and why would anyone eat clay???? The magic word is “detoxification”.   Many animals scavenge for a wide variety of foods containing toxins and pollutants. To eliminate these toxins and pollutants naturally, the animals often eat clay, whereby these toxins and pollutants, now bound to the ingested clay, can be excreted safely.

The United States is the most overweight, over-medicated and doctor-depended country in the world.  Most people suffer from some illnesses and disease, caused by an unhealthy diet. Edible clay, derived from Montmorillonite Clay or Calcium Bentonite, has several health benefits and can be taken for various conditions:

  • Regulated bowel movements (relief from constipation, diarrhea)
  • Clearer skin, whiter eyes
  • Stronger immune system (higher resistance to infectious diseases)
  • Improved gum health (for those suffering from periodontal disease)
  • Improved mood and emotional well-being

Curious as I was, I bought myself a pre-mixed bottle of (liquid) Bentonite, and faithfully took 1 tsp every morning on an empty stomach. I was expecting it to taste like dry dirt, but surprisingly, it tasted almost neutral.  The Bentonite makes the inside of your mouth feel “pasty” but it goes away after about two minutes. Within a few days, I became aware of some changes:  I noticed clearer skin; whiter and brighter eyes; my immune system feels stronger; and much improved and far more productive bowel-movements.

I am pleased with the outcome so far, and will definitely continue to take edible clay, to keep improving my overall health.

If you want to try edible clay for yourself, you can either make a mixture at home, or buy an already pre-made mixture at any local health food store. If you make your own mixture at home, combine 1 teaspoon of bentonite clay powder and 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk (dietary fiber) in an 8-oz glass of water.  Stir well and drink twice a day on empty stomach or at least 2h before dinner. You need the fiber to help excrete the absorbed toxins from the intestines. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily to keep the system flushed. This mixture will detox kidneys and liver, as well as the gallbladder.  For daily use, simply take one tablespoon of the mixture on an empty stomach in the morning. Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and refrain from foods high in saturated fats.
